From our work with Telegraph Gallery:
When Kate and I were in the process of opening our gallery, we began actively looking for someone to help with a few basic fixtures. We actually found Nathan online, but recognized his work from around town – The Farm, Eco-shop, etc. He seemed like a good fit for the job, his style complemented ours, and he quoted us a reasonable price. We were pleasantly surprised when not only was he more than able to handle what we knew we needed for our shop, but also had good suggestions of his own to really make our space memorable while staying well within our budget and timeline. Nathan was friendly, creative, and easy to work with, and the work he did for us was top-notch, affordable, and on time. We’re actually moving into a new house next month, and already have Nathan in mind for a few projects around our new home. – David Murray, owner of Telegraph

The Dawn Echo table by Sunnyside Projects

12 May

Nathan Hanley of Sunnyside Projects is in the process of converting a small shack on the edge of Charlottesville into a liveable tiny house.

The first piece of furniture actually needed to function as what is normally an entire room in a normal house.  The Kitchen.Photo May 11, 9 17 34 PM

A large naturally sealed table top is stain resistant and conditioned with a mineral oil/beeswax finish to ensure a long life.

The cedar rack/shelf underneath is perfect for storing appliances, dry goods, and dishes.

The dynamic legs of this table were inspried by the pieced together construction of the shack that Nathan began working on.  Much of the wood used to rebuild the structure after a tree fell on it was simply re-purposed pallet wood.  This gave the shack a very funky look and after Nathan painted the door with a striking blueberry violet the remaining paint had to go somewhere.

Mountaintop Montessori Hanging Chair Design Collaboration

7 May

This March the Charlottesville Mountaintop Montessori middle school class decided to use a hanging chair prototype design made by Sunnyside Projects for their annual auction fundraiser.

Montessori School Hanging Chair

The class had a great experience constructing the chair based on Sunnyside’s design, and it raised money for the school by going to a family that will use it as an outdoor sitting/relaxing area.

We are proud to have the opportunity to work within and inspire others in our community and welcome any collaborations with individuals or organizations in the future.

Custom Garden Beds by Sunnyside Projects

29 Apr

Last week Sunnyside Projects built a 120 square foot tiered garden for an awesome client in Earlysville.  Image

This all cedar and aluminum design is built with extra longevity in mind.  The mitered corners are double reinforced with diagonally drilled screws as well as bolted aluminum angles on the inside.  Image

The middles of these long beds are prone to bulging from the weight of the soil over time so aluminum pins are placed through the middle of both sides and connected with aluminum straps that keep the beds square.Image

The client wanted to enjoy gardening without having to bend or kneel constantly so we made the beds higher and with a wide trim to accommodate seating whether for weeding or having a glass of wine with friends.ImageSunnyside Projects can build a custom garden bed for your unique landscape, enhancing your gardening experience and adding value to your home.  We look forward to designing a fantastic garden with you.Image

Cape Cod Hoop House Vacation

13 Mar

By the power vested in Sunnyside Projects through careful research and design we hereby blessed our friend Dave of Edible Landscaping of Cape Cod with his first greenhouse structure.
A combination visit to an awesome partner in sustainability and mission to get a jump start on his farm’s growing season led us to a very productive couple of days even through the snow. If you are hanging out on the bicep of America (Cape Cod) Check this guy out at! He will get your yard into the permaculture groove at the drop of the downbeat.

Telegraph Gallery – Full Retail Store Build by Sunnyside Projects

4 Mar

Sunnyside Projects was presented with the opportunity to do a full store design with the great folks who just opened Telegraph Gallery in downtown Charlottesville.  The store was completely empty and needed not only useful display tables and shelves, but eye-catching pieces that would draw passersby into the gallery.
Their opening was very well received and was showcased in “The Hook” as on of the top spots to check out on First Fridays art night, as well as being featured on the front page of the “Daily Progress” in their Sunday edition.
Below are the pieces we made for their store.
