MOSTLY WHEN
Eric Hurtgen
The last 15 years of smartphone technology brought unprecedented change to the world of photography. In a similar way that the rangefinder camera democratized the photograph in the early 20th Century, the smartphone put easily-disseminated digital photography in the hands of anyone with a phone. Like the rangefinder before it, this technological advance presented new opportunities and new problems.
On the backdrop of the increasing sophistication of smartphone-created digital images, Eric Hurtgen began making photographs that responded to some of the problems and opportunities that he saw in this new branch of the photographic medium. This small, smartphone-sized book is the result of nearly a decade of that practice.
Eric Hurtgen is an artist and graphic designer who was born in Louisville, Kentucky. Eric’s work has been shown internationally, but mostly in smaller galleries across the Southeastern United States. He is the co-founder of New Rural, a slowly-growing collection of conversations, music, statements and artwork. Eric lives and works with his small family in a small town in rural Central Kentucky.

TEXAS, PARIS
Eric Ryan Anderson
In May of 2023, on two very different travel jobs to two seemingly different places… Eric spent his downtime walking and wandering, reactively and instinctively making pictures. Upon returning to the studio a month later, he started seeing some synchronicities between the two sets of pictures. Perhaps things aren’t always as different as they appear.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SANDERSON TEXAS
Eric Ryan Anderson
Photographed over the span of thirteen years in his native state, Happy Birthday Sanderson Texas reveals a wandering exploration on lineage, legacy and legend as seen via landscape, portraiture and abstraction. After spending a quarter century immersed in Texas culture and narrative, Eric left the state. Only in the ensuing years, through conversations around the world, did he start to see what “Texas” meant to people and how that clashed with the reality of his upbringing. Thus, a sometimes-sporadic exploration of the state began. This project began as a study on roots and family lineage, morphed into an exploration of death and life and resurrection, and ultimately found nuance and value in a quiet little town called Sanderson.
